ARTIST STATEMENT
artist-statement
I consider myself a visual artist because making art makes me happy. I start with an idea; then I sketch in a sketchbook, or if I am painting, I draw directly on a canvas. Everything I work on must be planned out first, then I allow myself to get messy with the details. Attending university helped me discover that I could blend realism and 2D animated styles.
Over the past two years, I have been applying these two concepts to my artwork; it has shown me that I need to be more vulnerable. As I have drawn portraits of my face, I noticed how much I display an exaggerated face that is not my real, everyday face, if that makes sense? My work gives me a voice to express those faces, the ones that I do not show publicly. I am a timid person, so I am used to people applying labels to me that are not true.
But when I create, I allow myself to scream about an interest, a feeling, something that cannot be described in words. Art gives me another way of presenting myself to the world. I get to show any and everything that gives my life meaning. There are also little things and moments I never want to forget, so my art could be about a friend, a show, a side character, or pieces of myself.
